Course Content
Delegate participation was high with a good mix of interactive exercises both in the classroom and outside. The simulated hostile scenarios which were conducted in nearby woods were realistic and included a surprise armed abduction, explosions of IED and other munitions, trauma injuries including amputations and how to negotiate a check point.
Outdoor activities were interspersed with classroom lectures on general first aid, ballistics, civil unrest, mines and IEDs, PPE, vehicle movements and ambush, avoiding abduction, medical issues and precautions which should be taken in regions that have suffered natural disasters.
One subject omitted from the proposed syllabus was the session on navigation.
Throughout the course emphasis was given to assessing and evaluating risk both in assignment preparation and with ‘on the ground’ dynamic assessment. On frequent occasions delegates were instructed not to take unnecessary risks and to think seriously about continuing with a course of action which might be a potential risk. This is an essential part of hostile environment training and is sometimes omitted by other course providers.
Delegates were also instructed not to rely solely on the course content but to research and prepare carefully before going into a hostile environment.
The three tutors were very knowledgeable and had extensive experience of hostile environments, both as army/navy personnel and as personal safety advisors. Previous clients have included the BBC, Reuters and other media organisations. All scenarios and lectures were based around risks that media staff could experience. When asked, other delegates felt that the information provided was pertinent to their own personal experience and was very relevant to their job.
Course notes were provided on CD which saved extensive note taking.
Additional Information
A.i.d Training and Operations Ltd are able to offer other courses including bespoke short awareness courses for senior editorial management which would be of benefit to those responsible for sending staff to hostile environments.
Summary
A.i.d. Training and Operations Ltd provide an extensive, informative and comprehensive course for staff going into hostile environments. The course was objective and did not glamorise potential risks.
The importance of good preparation and assessing risks both before and during assignment was covered very well and highlighted the need for careful planning before deployment.
I would recommend A.i.d Training and Operations Ltd as a TM provider of Media OSSFAT 5 Day Courses.
